In the September issue of Parade Magazine, Dr. Mehmet Oz, star of The Dr. Oz Show was interviewed concerning his thoughts on Weight loss, Dementia and the Medical Breakthroughs that are quickly transforming health care. First we want to say that we are not personally against or attempting to refute all that Dr. Oz purports either in his program or in this particular article. This is our response and opinion in reference to his comments on the use of mind altering drugs specifically concerning LSD and psilocybin mushrooms.
What we found interesting were his comments on ‘drug therapy’. Like most people, we were amazed by how fast medical marijuana has been legalized and even more alarmed to witness the legalization of recreational marijuana, already within nine states. The following is the quote from the interview of Dr. Oz. “Though Oz says he has never smoked a joint, he’s all for the therapeutic potential of substances once ignored on moral grounds. LSD and psilocybin (a compound produced in “magic mushrooms”) are gaining credibility as treatments for anxiety, depression and addiction because they silence the default pathway in the brain that causes rumination.”
Having lived through the hippy era of the 70’s we witnessed the effects on those who experimented with hallucinogenic drugs, including LSD, psilocybin mushrooms and various other hallucinogenic substances and have seen first hand the severity of how harmful these drugs are. In our day, marijuana was considered to be a “gateway drug” meaning it opens a person up to experimenting with harder drugs while embracing a lifestyle that accompanies this kind of behavior. It appears from Dr. Oz’s statements that this still holds true today. There have been legitimate reasons for the legalization of marijuana for medical reasons. We understood that the oil derived from the marijuana plant did not have the THC component found in marijuana that enabled a person to ‘get high’. That soon changed as News reports are now showing that now some who receive medical marijuana are able to get high from the medication. This quickly opened the door for marijuana to be sold as a recreational drug and now other substances once ignored on moral grounds are being pursued by the medical profession as a way to cope with anxiety and depression.
We have personally witnessed friends who ‘never’ fully recovered from their experiences to live a normal life after taking LSD or mushrooms. In fact some never made it through their experience and committed suicide. We can say emphatically that believing the hypothesis, (that these drugs will treat anxiety, depression and addiction) to be even remotely credible is like reading an episode from, ‘The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers’ comic book and thinking your reading a copy of ‘The New England Journal of Medicine’. In fact in our estimation from watching the effects of these drugs and substances the opposite results are more likely to occur, they will become more anxious, spiral deeper into depression, and be led into even more addictive behaviors that will ultimately destroy your conscience, your brain, and your life.
So why are we addressing this in our newsletter? Because we live in a world that is at war and as born again and radically saved Christians we need to address the reality of what we see unfolding within our world and our times. We need to be talking about the issues and not allow the truth to be hidden from this generation and stand by and watch them “perish through lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” KJV
Pennsylvania has the highest percentage of opiate addictions and subsequent deaths of any state. The heartbreaking reality is that there are now thousands of grandparents raising their grandchildren because their parents are either severely addicted, incapacitated, or dead from opiate addictions. The pharmaceutical companies along with doctors empathically told us that “opiates were perfectly safe and non-addictive!” Which begs us to ask. “Has the medical and pharmaceutical profession shown any inclination to take responsibility for their actions or are they still motivated more by financial greed rather than the health and well being of the public?”
What does Dr. Oz mean When He Says…
“Silence the Default Pathway in the Brain that causes rumination?”
The word ‘rumination’ as defined in Webster’s Dictionary is when a person’s mind repeatedly focuses its attention on the symptoms of one’s distress, on its causes and consequences, as opposed to its solutions, causing the mind to be consumed with worry, anxiety and a host of other negative emotional states. The medical profession is hoping to silence these pathways by the use of hallucinogenic drug therapy.
The best way to silence the default pathways that cause us to relive the repetitive pain of traumatic events bringing fear, shame and depression eventually leading us to addiction is found in our relationship with our Creator, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit! “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
The repetitive pathways are silenced if the fruits of the Holy Spirit are appropriated within us through personal encounters with His great love. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” We are created for relationship with Him and nothing can fill that void except knowing and being known by Him.
As born again Christians our choices are not taken from us and as we grow in our relationship with Him we are given instructions from His word on how to nurture and stay in His peace and not allow the repetitive pathways to return. Many may need inner healing and deliverance from their past which may include prayers of repentance and renunciation, and to choose to forgive others through the power of the Holy Spirit. They may also need freedom from traumatic events or a lack of parental/human love that can only be healed and restored through Him. From my observation much rumination and torment comes from the lack of true repentance, replaying events and offenses caused by others within our minds, and from our own choices to fill our minds and hearts with garbage and untruths.
Freedom from torment and anxiety rumination caused by our own sin or bitterness and un-forgiveness toward others is supernaturally given when we confess our own weakness and sin to Him. In 1 John 1:9 It says “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The supernatural fruits are manifested and made real from the Holy Spirit and all of the fruits of the Holy Spirit are our birthright. Galatians 5:16-26 states it all very well. Verse 22 says “But the fruit of spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”
As we enter this time of Harvest and season where there is so much evil celebrated in the occult realm we pray that you will encounter Him and His great love even more and be transformed by the renewing of your minds and by the Holy Spirit alive within you! In His love always!
Well stated, Jesus the Master Physician!
