The ‘slow death’ of a Nation!

Like others I have wondered for years as to why there does not seem to be any reference in the Bible concerning our nation as it pertains to the end of days.   I even went so far as to wonder if our nation had suffered a major natural disaster or had been invaded by another nation.  As sad as those scenarios may be the answer could even be more heart wrenching, perhaps the autopsy will show that our nation suffered ‘a slow death’ at its own hands.

It would be sad if our nation followed the path that other great nations have taken, which led them not into the greatness that they were once destined to inhabit but to become only a historical footnote to what they could have been.  I believe that we can learn from the mistakes of those who have gone before and in doing so escape the destruction that they brought upon themselves.

Consider for a minute the words of John Adams, one of the principle framers of the American democratic experience, “Democracy never lasts long.  It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself.  There never was a democracy that did not commit suicide.”  As sobering as these words must have been for our new nation it should be even more sobering for us.  As Ralph Buultjens said in his book ‘The Decline of Democracy’, “Democracy arose in a time when the values of liberty and self-determination outranked all others…If we seek to restore democracy; we must first renew the values that gave it birth.”

We need to pray that God will sovereignty visit our nation with a revival so powerful that it will change the hearts of men and in doing so bring about the restoration of the values that gave birth to this grand experiment.  In the years preceding the Revolutionary War God sent us men like Johnathan Edwards, George Whitefield, John Wesley, Francis Asbury and others who plowed the fertile ground found in the hearts of men and planted and nurtured the seeds that grew into the values this country was founded upon.  Values that can only be found in the word of God and once those values had found their place in the lives of men they too became the sowers that in turn spread seed into the lives of others.  Producing a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”  Hebrews 12:11

Spiritual Faith is Built on Godly Values!

Alexander Fraser Tytler, (1747-1813) wrote the following. “Democracy progresses; From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.”

It would seem that our nation today is at a crossroads where we desire not what our forefathers fought so hard to attain but the very things our founders fought so hard against.  Without the values found in God’s word, mankind will not progress forward but will revert into the very thing it should fear the most, being ruled by its own selfish interest.  A Democracy that looses the values it was founded upon reverts back into the very slavery it struggled to come out of.    We need men and women who are so impacted by God that they cannot stop themselves from spreading the Good News to all they come in contact with and by the words of their testimony change a nation one person at a time.

History has shown us that when a nation finds itself lavished with an overabundance it easily loses the belief that it has any personal responsibility over its actions.  When the citizens of a nation feel that it is the government’s responsibility to take care of them they soon relinquish the very thing that made them into a great nation, its faith in God’s provision.  A selfish person believes it deserves what it did not work for and has forgotten that what is worthwhile is not so easily attained.  As hard as it is to attain the values that brought about a nations freedom keeping those values often proves to be even more difficult.  Those who have never had to personally sacrifice to get their freedom often take for granted what others have worked so hard to attain.

Where Values are Needed!

Many wonder how it could be, that in a nation as large and diverse as we have become, that all we could come up with to lead our country were the two we were left to choose from. Then again, when you abort sixty million babies since Roe vs Wade became law, what else can we expect?

We worry about inconsequential things and do not mention the epidemic of pornography that is destroying the moral fiber of our society.  Divorce in couples over fifty years of age in some areas is at a 275% increase, just in the past five years.  Seventy-five percent of African American children grow up without a father.  Transgender policies are infiltrating our schools and if you don’t realize it yet there is a concerted effort to teach our children that perversion is commendable.  Our history is being rewritten and our children are taught that homosexuality and same-sex marriage are commendable.

Listen!  While they remove our rights of free speech and to have a free press, they teach us that pornography, obscenity, and perversion are constitutional rights.  An unknown commentator said, “Freedom can only work to the extent of the morality of the people living in it.  Without strong moral motivations, freedom develops into license and license into anarchy.  Doing what is right in one’s own eyes, usually ends up in doing what is wrong.”

We have put so much faith in our political leaders who promise us social reforms as the answer to our woes and in doing so we have lost our spiritual heritage.  Putting our faith in a President even a Godly President should never take the place of our putting our faith in God.  We are in danger of trading a nation built upon strong Godly principles for a nation with no principles at all.

Our prayer is that all of us will be radically captured by His great love and power and that God will be raised to the highest place in our hearts and country once again. We pray for true freedom and liberty to be manifested upon us as we put God first and choose to live by the precepts given us through the words of life found in the Holy Bible. A Spiritual Awakening is needed – a radical revolution of His power and love poured out upon mankind.  Again we pray for Revival and say “yes “ Lord come!

Fantastic article. I agree that we have lost our way as a nation and have no hope to return to a simpler time unless we return to God’s instructions for a moral life!
